5/24/2023 0 Comments Namesake book fable![]() ![]() New character Holland comes in with a new twist in the plot. ![]() Returning from the first book is Koy (from Fable’s past as a dredger), Zola (the villain), and Saint who is Fable’s father. Fable, West, Willa, Auster, Paj, and Hamish are still on the Marigold with a quest. However, it is necessary to finish the duology if you have already read the first one I just preferred the first book to this one. It wasn’t boring by any means, and the journey was still good. ![]() Even though this book was thoroughly enjoyable, I felt like there was more filler than the first book.Still a lot of action but not as much kept my attention in this one as the first one. We are continuing to follow the path of Fable in her search for happiness and her journey to knowing herself.I actually got approved for this one and then read the first in preparation. Another gorgeous cover and I love how it fits with the first.Publisher: Wednesday Books wednesdaybooks AUTHOR: Adrienne Young adrienneyoungbooks ![]()

5/24/2023 0 Comments Rubyfruit![]() ![]() Rubyfruit Jungle was written in 1976, a breakthrough lesbian novel (though Brown herself would argue that this is a story about people in general, not a subsection of society) that has no doubt helped to shape modern queer literature. The only LGBT section I remember seeing in our island library were medical textbooks (and this was in the 90’s/00’s!) ![]() My god, how I could have done with this book when I was younger – but how out of the question it was at the time to get hold of queer literature (or anything on the periphery). I wanted to start this review with the words ‘Growing up gay is hard.’ And while every part of that is true, it’s not in the spirit of Rubyfruit Jungle, which celebrates a shrugging off of oppression, the adventure of self-discovery, and the shredding of labels and limits. ![]() 5/24/2023 0 Comments Dm cornish monster blood tattoo![]() Thanks to Lyndal Gibson of Lyndal Gibson Photography for taking these fantastic photos of the event. As for Levi, he was an interesting character, although I found him to be inconsistent at times. We were constantly beaten over the head with the fact that, perhaps, Enne’s soul was actually dark and tainted. ![]() I really dislike the trope of a proper young lady being corrupted and realizing that she isn’t really such a goody two shoes as she thought she was. I can’t really pin point what it was, but I was seriously underwhelmed by them. I had a lot of issues with the story, but my main one was that the characters fell super flat for me. Her only lead is Levi Glaisyer, a street lord and they form an unlikely alliance that leads them on a dangerous search. In this story, we follow a proper young lady Enne Salta, as she arrives to New Reynes, dubbed the City of Sin, in search of her missing mother. Unfortunately, while it does deliver on some of these aspects this book left a lot to be desired for me. Many others agree with me, many of them have been made into short Scholastic films, too: Red Riding Hood. I own all of his fairy tales in my personal library and often use them to read with savvy kids who always fall in love with them. The illustrations are funny and the retellings by Marshall are modern and humorous. I love that it hearkens back to the earliest versions of the tale in which the bears are the victims of an intruding hag. I love the humor of Marshall's books but Goldilocks is my favorite because she is simply so bratty and the bears are so wonderful that I fall in love with them every time I read the book. The continuing popularity of his fairy tales and George and Martha books and Space Case and many others helps.
